Back in the late ‘90’s I was working on independent films in NYC on set as a Stills Photographer. The pay was low the hours were long and the crews were amazing. Highly skilled professionals just making shit work. It was a blast. And you’ve never heard of most of the movies I was on. With non union sets, they could pull a still photographer for a day here and there with no commitment, so if someone of note was expected for a cameo, they’d need stills. This day was star studded and I knew about André as well as anyone who ever picked up a fashion magazine in the ‘80s or ‘90s. It was clear that he brought his own wardrobe, as he swept onto set wearing a white fur coat with a train. For a dinner scene. This session with @gabe_martindale_ was one of those easy collaborations. He saved very contrasty images that played with shadows and light as inspiration for his shoot. I wanted to use Euronutz garage on 212 as a location for some time now, and he loved the idea when I brought it up in our design consultation. We began at the studio organizing wardrobe and planning the looks. There were strips of sunlight streaming in, so we started there with some drama. Then to the grounds of the auto repair shop. The beauty of working with clients this way allows for a portfolio with a variety of looks. This experimentation, in turn, helps them explore how they want to represent themselves both personally and professionally.
